5 Simple Ways to Liven up Snail Mail!

I love writing and sending snail mail. Who doesn’t love a REAL letter in their mailbox! I think actual, non-junk, happy snail mail gets delivered SO few and far between. Maybe only birthdays? And wedding invitations? Let’s all agree, we need more snail mail!!

It’s always my goal to send at least one *just for fun* piece of mail a month. Usually my sister is the recipient, because I like her. My goal is always to make the envelope as fun as possible! I can’t say that my lettering writing skills are as great as my envelope decorating skills, though. Ha!

Here are a couple of my tricks for making fun, happy snail mail:

1. Fun lettering. You don’t have to be a pro at this. Do your best cursive. Or go back to your middle-school-note-passing-block-letter days. You can add polkadots around the capital letters. You can add squiggly lines below the address. It’s really, super easy and makes every letter look more fun 🙂

2. Washi tape. Go crazy with it. You can find washi tape at any craft or paper store! Or Target or Staples! So pretty much anywhere. Hashtag no excuses.

3. Dark envelopes with light pen ink. This is a FANCY way to send mail. Paper Source has a ton of darker colored envelope options to choose from. Then I use metallic Sharpies or Craft Smart chalk markers (you can find both at Michael’s) to make it snazzy!

4. Mix + match stamps! There are stamps to match any personality. I usually choose the flowery ones, or ones with really great typography on them. I’ll also buy a pack of 1 or 2 cent stamps (usually these are weird designs, but I like weird) and I’ll add those to the envelope to make it a little more interesting!

5. Watercolors! Splatter some watercolor all over the front of the envelope in an abstract pattern. Wait for it to dry completely before you figure out how to write in the address! It’s kind of a puzzle. Just make sure the mail guys can read the street name and zip code.

You have all the tools, now GO WRITE SOME LETTERS! 😉 Bye.

JULIA BLAKE ART – Julia’s bright, bold works of art are some of my favorites in my Instagram feed. Her work is full of texture, and I love the way she paints poppies (pictured above)! Julia is also a co-founder of the WICKED COOL Artist Common in Belchertown, MA. Her and her team renovated an old church and now artists can rent it out for artist retreats! I’m planning a fall visit to see the space and do some painting!

EVENINGS ON THE PORCH – Nate and I bought a patio set and we’re totally enjoying being outside so often this summer! I do my work out there during the day, and we eat, chat and read outside in the evenings. I honestly think our living space doubled in size. We always light a few candles on the table (no tiki torches yet) and most weeknights we grill chicken or fish and a yummy veggie. Besides our neighbors constantly using power tools, it’s pretty perfect out there. 😉

OLD SCHOOL MAROON 5 – Maybe it’s hipster of me to say this, but no Maroon 5 album will be quite as epic as their Songs About Jane album. I’ve been feeling nostalgic, so lately that’s all I’ve been listening to! P.S. This album came out when I was in 7th grade… I’m so old.

THE WILD DIET – I listen to a slew of podcasts and one of my favorites is called Fat Burning Man with Abel James. Abel recently published a cookbook called the Wild Diet, and besides having great recipes (I’ve only tried a couple, but they’ve all been on point), it also includes a WEALTH of knowledge about clean eating, the food industry, and other nerdy healthy stuff that I’m really interested in. So! Check it out both the podcast and the cookbook if you’re into natural health and wellness stuff!

Happy Friday!

Art on the Green

Art on the Green in Wellesley MA - Letters from Rita log_0018(Paintings above by Chelsea Sebastian)

I spent an evening last week wandering around the gardens of Elm Bank in Wellesley, MA, enjoying a LOT of really gorgeous, local art. The best part was the artists were live-painting right then and there! I’m pretty mesmerized by paint, so this was a very cool event. Elm Bank also hosted tours of the gardens and there was a string quartet playing music all night!

Thank God for Instagram or I wouldn’t have even known about the event! I’ve followed Carolyn Mackin and Julia Blake on Instagram for well over a year now and have always admired their unique styles of work. I knew they were both local artists, but never had a chance to meet them… until last week at this event! Because they posted about it on Insta! It was so great to meet them in person, chat about art and enjoy their work in real life.

Shop Feature | Pine Straw Wellesley

Pine Straw in Wellelsey, MA is probably the cutest boutique you’ll ever step foot inside. The whole shop looks and smells and feels like (a more stylish version of) home. The staff is friendly and the space has a great vibe. Everywhere you look there are AMAZING, adorable, interesting treasures for all your home decor and party hosting needs. The overall feel of the shop is a little vintage and a little country mixed with a bit of eclectic. Also known as: I want to live there.

I love all the home decor, books, and clothes that owner Tracy collects! She spends so much time seeking out the perfect items to showcase. She even travels to Paris each year just to collect one of a kind treasures! Unique plates and dishes, perfumes, hand towels, candles, pillows, jewelry and note cards are just a few of the things you’ll find at Pine Straw!

Here are some of my favorite little vignettes in the shop!

(I stole this series title from Superfruit, thanks guys)

BRIMFIELD ANTIQUE FAIR – I’m obsessed with Brimfield. So are people from all over the country/world. Not joking, it’s pretty famous. I’ve been probably 6 different times over the course of 4 years to explore the vintage, old, dusty, treasure-y goodness, my latest trip being last week. Even when you think you’ve seen everything, there is ALWAYS more to see/buy. My favorite booth to peruse is the old postcard station! The next fair happens September 8th-13th!

THIS SONG –  This song is my summer jam, which is not a surprise, since it’s all about summer. Been singing this all week at the top of my lungs, and good thing because I just got tix to see Ben’s live show in October!! EEEE!!!

HEARTCRAFTED CO. –  One of my roommates from college, Amanda, owns an Etsy shop based in Philadelphia. She specializes in creating wooden, hand-painted signs and just went full time with her business a few months ago!! Talk about rocking it out on the handmade homefront! I love her lettering style. It’s bold, with a little flirty mixed in, but she still keeps it classic! Her wedding signs are my favorite!

GINGER ICE CREAM – Sounds crazy, tastes crazy, is crazy… good. I’ve had ginger ice cream twice in the past 3 weeks and I can’t get enough. It’s sweet, spicy and summery all at the same time. Maple Valley Creamery sells their pints in local grocery stores! Get some, I promise you it’s the yummiest thing ever.
