Hiking Hale Reservation | Westwood, MA

letters from rita - hiking Hale reservation

Last weekend Nate and I visited Hale Reservation – a large piece of land in Westwood, MA that we had heard good things about. It was the perfect fall day and we planned for a 2.5 mile hiking loop… But! We got a little lost trying to find the start of that trail 🙂 So we ended up taking the Red trail that went all the way around the pond, which was only around 2 miles. It was so gorgeous! There were only 2 real ‘hike’ parts of this trail; the majority of it was pretty flat and enjoyable. I actually really want to go back and run the trail and explore a couple more of the trail options!

Pros & Cons of Owning a Kayak

Most of you guys know that Nate and I bought kayaks this summer. We weren’t even gung-ho, seasoned kayakers before the purchase, but we had always talked about how it would be fun to go exploring whenever we wanted. So after a bunch of research (we landed on the L.L.Bean Manatees) we went for it, and had probably around 12 amazing kayak rides all over New England this summer! I wanted to write out a pros and cons list, in case you are thinking of buying kayaks in the future. Maybe this will help your decision!

Letters from Rita kayaking

Pro of owning a kayak: You can go on adventures whenever you want!
Con of owning a kayak: And whenever that time is, get ready to hoist 55 pounds of solid plastic over your head onto the top of your car (4 times: twice up, twice down)
Pro of the con: MUSCLES. 😉

Letters from Rita kayaking

Pro: You’ll always have really good Instagram material.
Con: It takes every ounce of self control not to post 6 kayaking photos in a row!

Pro: It’s a great way to get some healthy activity in!
Con: Just don’t counter-act that healthiness by packing up your kayak with a million snacks (because it’s totally possible!)

Pro: You will see lots of cool nature and animals on your excursions.
Con: Next up on your ‘hobbies to try’ list is ‘bird-watching’. And then comes your 65th birthday.

Letters from Rita kayaking

Pro: You have an automatic fun thing to do with friends on the weekend!
Con: Except if your friends don’t own kayaks, then they are paying a lot to rent them whenever they want to hang out with you.

Pro: It’s a great conversation starter at get-togethers.
Con: Until the conversation goes from “That’s so cool!” to “Where the heck are you storing them this winter?” (we have no idea)

Letters from Rita kayaking

No, but really, there are way more pros than cons, I promise! See?
Pro: Being out in the sunshine, and more importantly, on the water.
Pro: Quality time with your person.
Pro: Awesome views for days.
Pro: Feeling like Lewis and Clark.
Pro: A friendly game of bumper boats.
Pro: Exploring new parts of your area in a way most people don’t get to explore.
Pro: A really good reason to get up to catch the sunrise.

Soon I will do a helpful, informative post about all the rivers, lakes and ponds we kayaked on this summer, and why we liked/disliked each one! Coming soon!

Practice Makes Better

letters from rita lettersfromrita.com

Any creative knows that practice makes better (not perfect, though!) Creatives produce our best work when we are consistent, disciplined and diligent about practicing. Even if we’ve been ‘in it’ – in the industry or making that type of art – for a long time, if we forget to make intentional time for practice, we’ll just stay regular, instead of becoming better and more refined.

For the last few days I’ve made it a point to do at least one doodle or watercolor per day. I’m excited to A) get better at my craft and B) have a really rad collection of random little doodles at the end of the month. After many months of making pretty things for other people, it feels good to make stuff just to make stuff! To create what comes to my mind! It never happens unless I am purposeful about it, so that is what I am up to this month!

Also! I recently watched this talk about the creative process that inspired me, so give it a watch if you have 10 minutes. (It’s particularly about songwriting, but it is applicable to all artists!)

More Like Love

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through, love serve one another.” Galatians 5:13

Recently God has been teaching me about love, and more specifically, about the different ways to show love.

My Grandma passed away last week. It’s a sad way to start a blog post, but it’s what has been going on in my life lately, and how God has been teaching me.

My Grandma was a wonderful human. She was the kind of grandma who baked cookies with my little sister and I every Christmas, and loved to swim with us in the lake during the summer. She valued people over things, as evidenced by the last ten years of Christmas presents: donating to Samaritan’s Purse in our honor, instead of buying presents. More recently, she fervently showed off our wedding album to anyone who would look at it and would call every other week just to talk (I probably should’ve been the one doing that, now that I think about it.) In short, I love her and I miss her already.

Nate and I have been married for 3 years and this is the first time as a couple that we’re experiencing the loss of a close family member. The night my mom called to tell me the news, I was ok for about an hour. And then, right as I was climbing into bed, the weight of everything hit me. And the tears started. Nate snuggled up next to me and held me for a while. He didn’t try to fill the silence with words (what words are there, really?), but instead quietly consoled me through his presence. That’s all he needed to do. I felt loved.

Your intentional presence is a way to show love. All you, all in, no words needed. (Example: Jesus)

I got coffee and went on a walk with two friends this morning. About 45 minutes into chatting, the conversation was getting deeper, so I went for it. “Well, to be honest.. my grandma died last week, so it’s been an emotional couple days.” I don’t know why I waited for 45 minutes to tell them that. It probably should have been the first thing out of my mouth. Telling them about my Gram then turned into stories of all of our grandparents and how wonderful they are (and how much we miss the ones who are gone). At the end of our two hour conversation, these friends prayed over me and my family, which was such an unexpected blessing for me.

Opening up is a way to show love. I love and trust my friends enough to share the deep things.
Praying is another way to show love. And not just “I’ll pray for you”, but also “Let’s pray right now”. (Luke 22:32)

~*~

Just in the last week, God has visibly shown and reminded me of 3 ways to show love. Of course these aren’t the only ways to love, but definitely a couple that can help me live more like Jesus, and therefor more like love. So, I just wanted to share that with you guys. <3

P.S. Nate met my Grandma not too long after we started dating. She loved to tell the story of the first time Nate was with us for a holiday (Thanksgiving 2010) and she heard someone call her “Grandma!”. But it was neither my sister or I, it was Nate calling her that! 🙂 She was really touched by that moment and I’m really glad that he had a chance to get to know her over the last 5 years.

Weekly Obsessions

BEN RECTOR – Nate and I saw Ben last night at the House of Blues and the concert was sooo good!! I love this guy’s music 100%. He is an amazing singer and his music is so meaningful and well-written and full of life truths and relatable things. My favorite songs are probably Fear and Men that Drive Me Places (I cried the first time I heard this one). It was also awesome that Nate knew some words to the songs (yayyy for forcing your music tastes on your spouse!) I just had a really awesome experience. Live music makes my heart happy.

ONE BARS – I’ve been LOVE.ING. these bars lately for right after my workouts and runs! They’re made only with fruit, aka: there’s no gluten, dairy or added sugar in them, so they fit right in with healthy lifestyles (or trying-hard-to-be-healthy-lifestyles, like mine ha! 😉 ) I’ve only seen them in the wild at Peet’s Coffee, but you can buy them by in 12-packs on their website. My fave is the apple flavor!

CROSSFIT – On my 26th birthday (June 1st) I made the decision to COMMIT to this crazy thing called Crossfit. It’s hard and my body hurts after each workout, but honestly it’s worth it & I’m pretty obsessed! I can feel myself getting stronger and I like that a couple days a week I’m doing something besides cardio. And GUYS. I can do 20 push ups in a row. IN A ROW. That’s pretty legit, right? 😉

HARPOON PUMPKIN CIDER – Fall + cider + pumpkin cider = Best fall drink option, hands down!
